LORIN SAMUEL GATES, son of Orson Cowles and Laura(Loomis) Gates, was born in East Hartford, Connecticut, September 1, 1845. He was the grandson of Samuel and Lucy(Cowdery) Gates and of Lorin and Maria Ann (Gillett) Loomis.The first immigrant ancestor in America is believed to have been George Gates, whose descendants settled in Haddam,Connecticut.
