The website tells the story of the Amhersts of Didlington Hall. Lord Amherst of Hackney was a great collector, particularly of books. The family were also collectors of Egyptian, and Assyrian artefacts, and travelled extensively on the Nile. Lady William Cecil ran her own excavations. Howard Carter was at Didlington Hall as a boy and it was in the Old Museum that he first learned about Egypt.
